Announcing the 3rd Annual Joshua Tree Gathering
|
| When: |
March 12-14, 2010 |
| Where: |
Jumbo Rock Campground, Joshua Tree National
Park, California
We'll be camping on the loop that contains
campsite 20.
(If you're not a camper, lodging is available
nearby in Twentynine Palms.) |
| Cost: |
$0. The only thing we ask is you bring
a dish for the pot luck dinner Saturday night.
And firewood is also always appreciated. |
| What: |
What is the annual Joshua Tree Gathering?
It's a weekend of photography, phun and
pellowship. It's an opportunity to get
away and join like-minded photographers for a
weekend in Southern California's own national
park - Joshua Tree. We'll do some great
photography, shoot the breeze and, not to be
missed, enjoy the sumptuous eats at the Saturday
night pot luck (it gets even better every year). |
| Who: |
If you enjoy photography and the out of
doors, this event is for you. It doesn't
matter if you have a $45,000 Phase-One digital
camera or a $200 point-and-shoot, we're here to
have a good time, take a few pictures and
perhaps pick up a tip or two. And digital
or film, color or black and white, we don't
care. There's no snobbery here one way or
the other. |
Joshua Tree Sunrise (2006)
|
| Schedule |
Here's an outline of what we will do
- Friday - Gather in my
campsite. Bring snacks, drinks and
some firewood. We'll talk about the
weekend and get some ideas for Saturday
shooting.
- Saturday - Morning: Form up
into groups and head out for sunrise.
We'll greet the sun with the appropriate
enthusiasm, the quite of dawn broken only by
the soft sound of clicking shutters.
The rest of the day we'll explore the park.
There may even be some impromptu
lessons back in camp.
- Saturday - Evening:
After the sunset shoot (at various
locations), we'll all return to our camp for
the incredible JT pot luck. Everyone
should bring a dish to serve 8. The
definition of a dish is appetizer, salad,
entree and desert. We'll trust to luck
so bring what you feel comfortable with.
If we end up with all deserts, well, hey,
life could be a lot worse. You should
also bring your own eating utensils, drinks
and camp chairs. Oh, and did I mention
that firewood is always appreciated?
- Sunday - Morning: We'll
do another sunrise shoot, again at various
locations. If you want to return to
our camping area, bring your breakfast with
you. We'll have a chance to socialize
some more. The rest of the day is
pretty much up to you. We'll formally
break up around noon but some of us will
still be running around and shooting.

| Location Notes: |
Joshua Tree is very special, not only because
of the amazing trees that grow there, but also
for the variety of climates. The Joshua
Trees grow in the high desert at an elevation of
about 4000 feet. There are many things to
explore including abandoned gold mines, stamp
mills, the Desert Queen ranch, extinct
volcanoes, Barker Dam, Hidden Valley and the
Wonderland of Rocks.
Contrasting the high desert is
the low desert of the Pinto Basin. Besides
the scope and breadth of the basin itself there
are the famous Cholla Gardens and the grotesque
yet graceful Ocotillo Patch. And at least
one of our (likely) participants is intimately
familiar with the back country of Joshua Tree.
So you can see there is no end
of great subjects.
